A conversation with SWORD

SWORD is not a DJ project in the classic sense. It is a deliberately shaped musical approach that tries to bring back something increasingly rare in an algorithm-driven world: attention, presence and quality.

What does music mean to you?

For me, music is not background noise.

It is not simply “something playing”, but a state. A tool that can move a person out of their current mental environment. When it works, after a while you are not just listening to it - you are inside it.

That is what interests me. Not how many tracks were played in one evening, but whether something actually happened during that time.

Many people say that music is no longer at the centre of a night out. How do you see this?

The focus has definitely changed.

I often see people documenting the evening rather than living it. Photos, videos, constant social media presence - as if showing that they are there has become more important than actually being there.

I am looking for a different kind of experience: the point where someone is no longer looking at their phone, but is simply present. Not broadcasting, but experiencing.

Is this a conscious direction for you?

Yes.

I do not want to ban anything. I want to offer the possibility of a different mode of being - an environment where people do not have to react constantly, but can actually pay attention.

Today, that is already valuable in itself.

You are often critical of today’s music culture. What bothers you most?

I do not have a problem with new music.

I have a problem with how much of everything has become superficial. The supply is enormous, but very little truly remains.

Platforms are built for quick reaction. Immediate impact matters more than whether something lasts. After a while, that empties things out.

So is “retro” a response to that?

Yes, but not as nostalgia.

For me, retro is more of an attitude: something taken from an era when sound, recording and performance had weight.

Vinyl and CD reinforce this: you have to choose, you have to pay attention, you have to be present. That is a very different experience from an endless list.

Let’s talk about sound. Why is it so important to you?

Because it is the foundation.

If the sound is not right, everything else becomes secondary. But if it sounds right, even simple things start to work.

I am not looking for a loud, overdriven sound. I want something that remains enjoyable for a longer time: clean, controlled and balanced. That is what makes the whole experience work.

How defining are vinyl and CD in that?

They are important, but not exclusive.

The goal is not to force everything to come from those formats. The point is how the music actually sounds.

The format is a tool, not the goal. If another solution works better in a given situation, I use it. Quality is what matters.

What makes an evening musically good?

That it feels coherent.

Not just the tracks, but the whole thing: sound, tempo, atmosphere and proportions.

That is not automatic. It requires attention.

Where do you think music culture is heading?

There are cycles.

Right now we are in a very fast, noisy period. But it will not stay like this forever. There is always a point where people start looking for calmer, more substantial experiences.

That is what I would rather build on.

What would you like people to take away from a SWORD evening?

That there was a period of time when they were truly present.

Not just something playing in the background, but something that had an effect. A moment where they stepped out of what they were in before.

If that happens, the music has done its job.

Not more music - a better experience.
Sound

Sound

“Good sound often does not stand out - it is simply missed when it is not there.”

SWORD is a quality-focused musical presence. The goal is not loudness or overdriven impact, but a musical environment that remains pleasant to listen to over time.

01

Controlled dynamics

Volume alone is not value. Good sound is about balance, dynamics and a natural build-up of energy.

02

Listenability

The aim is a clean, controlled and balanced sound that does not become tiring, yet remains present throughout the evening.

03

Format as a tool

Vinyl, CD or digital source are tools. What matters is how the music actually sounds in the room.

04

Musical arc

An evening is not just a series of separate tracks. Atmosphere, tempo, energy and sound together create the experience.

05

Own equipment, one coherent system

SWORD works exclusively with its own familiar, pre-matched equipment. Here, quality is not a decorative label: it means a controlled signal path, reliable operation and sound precisely adjusted to the venue.

Not more volume. Not more effects. A more consciously shaped musical presence.
